I vaguely recall “The Velveteen Rabbit” and I’m guessing that Artie’s problems stem from the book’s notion that a toy can only be real if it is loved by a child. Artie may see a parallel notion that the products of mad science can only be real if humans love them. I can see why that would bug him. Oh, and Flat Stanley WAS up to no good.
