What would Mikey back then have wanted the topic to change to?

Of course when all of the adults are excited about the new baby, it’s only natural the other kid feels ignored. At least he didn’t remain bitter about it.

The trick to bringing a second child into the life of the first child is to include them in everything to do with child #2, and make them feel special while doing so. This worked extremely well for our family. Our eldest became very protective and somewhat possessive about his new baby brother, stepping between strangers and the baby anytime someone got too nosy about the baby.

Mem’ries light the corners of my mind

Misty water-colored mem’ries of how jealous we were

Common response. That’s why, when we went to see someone with a new baby, I always talked with the older one(s) first, so they would not feel left out – not just rush into see the new arrival.

Years ago a friend and coworker had a baby. She was off work on maternity leave, so I went to her house to visit. We stood yakking for a good 15 minutes about what was going on at work since she left, until her young son, about 4 or 5, grabbed my hand and said “Don’t you want to see the new baby??” and pulled me into the baby’s room! No jealousy there, all pride in his little sister!
