The problem is that nobody knows what capital-A Art is supposed to BE anymore. Technique isn’t enough; aesthetics isn’t enough. The only thing everybody agrees on (at least, both the creators and the critics) is that it has to be something nobody’s done before. So the art world is just “throw everything against the wall and see what sticks.” I assume that some of it WILL stick, and that art historians of 100 years from now will have someone to talk about when they talk about our era, but we won’t know who that’ll be until 20 years from now (or longer).
Nobody wants to be the public who rejected the next Van Gogh, so whenever we see something we don’t understand we say “Well, maybe there’s something to it.” But the existence of a handful of unrecognized or misunderstood geniuses doesn’t mean that everyone who’s unrecognized or misunderstood is a genius.
Marcel Duchamp and the Dadaists deliberately “broke” art 100 years ago and, like Humpty Dumpty, nobody’s figured out how to put it back together again.
