    All those 19th century bohemians who died insane died either from late-stage syphilis or from wormwood. Anything sold as absinthe today uses a much less deadly ingredient. (Google disagrees, but there’s no telling what their editors have been drinking.)

    I worked with a man in my first job who had been stationed in Japan for a year, probably around 1950. Over there he tried absinthe and was not impressed. He said it was like wine. Then he had to go to the men’s room and found he was unable to walk – he had to crawl!
