Digital cameras probably existed in 1997, but I don’t think they were (yet) as good as good film cameras (unless your name was Rockefeller). I do remember my wife buying a good film camera in 1999, and then a relatively utilitarian digital camera that wrote to 3" recordable CDs in 2002.
