Here’s where you reply with, "Oh, but you can chief. Let’s start with something simple, try this: “Good morning Thornapple.”"

The wording in the second panel is difficult to understand. Does he mean “Wish that I could say the same”? I may need to go back to bed and re-read it later.

My response to that was always “You could if you were as good a liar as I am!”

Not every one can choke down a whopper as big as that.

Thornapple has to lie because he is subservient and must mask his feelings; Chief is superior and does not have to mask his feelings, he will do so only if he wishes to be ‘pleasant’!

And the mode of speech the Chief uses in the 2nd panel is the way ALL “well-educated” people once spoke! The older ones STILL DO!

Because he’s the boss, Thornapple! It’s that simple!
