Mr Royce, it’s not about race, never has been. It’s about being here illegally. Period. If they and or the family cheated and lied and committed fraud to get in and or stay, then they are to be deported. Regardless if they are from Ireland or anywhere else.

I come to the comics page to escape reality and politics. This strip keeps dragging it back up. Time to drop this one from my favorites.

You have obvioiusly never seen the movie Born In East LA. Cheech Marin, whose character is born in East LA, gets caught without his ID and sent to Mexico where he knows little Spanish and not much of the culture. It is his struggle to get home. But he is a citizen and has nothing to worry about.

How terribly sad that Congress is dragging its feet on passing a law for the Dreamers, the immigrants who were brought here by parents when they were infants and children and know no other country.

It’s not race, or culture, it’s xenophobia. the fear of aliens. the fear of the unknown. you’re all right, and you’re all wrong. I have been reading this strip for uncountable years, and the authors have occasionally gone places with it that are surprising where they end up. I love Baldo, and the lessons I read here. Also the art. Each person has their own personal reasons to call it “race” or “culture” or “place (country) of origin.” Like I said, all of you readers who are complaining about this strip today, and your distaste of where you think the story line is going: I think, I sincerely hope, that you are all wrong. Go back a few days of the strip, this current story-line, and look again at the immigration officer…just saying…

I have heard many people in the U.S. say: " This is America, they should all learn to speak English ! "

Ironically, many of these same ‘Mercans, either as tourists or expats, make absolutely no effort to learn the language of the country that they’re in…and, even more galling, ….. expect all the people in the foreign country to speak English !

That said, in defense of immigrants ( legal or otherwise ) in any country, learning a new language is NOT easy. Some people learn faster than others but for the vast majority of people, it is very difficult – English is perhaps the hardest language to master. I watch my very intelligent and well-educated wife struggle daily with learning basic English.

I am considered a polyglot because I have a certain degree of proficiency in several languages but, I will be the first to tell you, even after about 5 years of living here in Ecuador. and speaking Spanish, almost exclusively, I consider myself far from being fluent ! I will never reach the Spanish language proficiency level of my Ecuadorian family. But I try….
