    1. Is the joke that these farmers are up before the sun every single day except Christmas day, when they decide to go really, really slow to torture the kids?

    2. Laura is a suddenly a redhead with freckles and pigtails? I guess Santa decided to give her the gift of a makeover.

    3. When my son and my daughter were very young (like 2 years old) and didn’t understand the whole concept of gift giving to individual people, there was a brief moment when they assumed anything wrapped was theirs and they would make a run for wrapped gifts under a tree. The kids here remind me a little of that, because they are just shredding everything while the parents look on in astonishment. I guess the adults don’t get presents too?

    4. Finally we see Grandpa Will and it turns out Grandma Carrie can talk after all.

I love how she depicts the kids’ reactions. It was always torture to have to wait for the adults to get ready. 0.o

6 a.m. already. I’d like to hear her say that on a school day.

Having to wait for an adult to eat breakfast first? Not gonna happen! That would be cruel.

I remember one year—much to my chagrin—after jokingly telling our children not to wake Mom and I early on Christmas morning, they didn’t and proceeded to open their gifts without us ! ! ! ! Mom was not a happy elf that Christmas with the children or me ! ! !

I didn’t have it that bad in my day. The only rule was that everyone had to be up before any presents could be opened. But I had a landlady once who told me that HER family was even stricter than Elly’s — everyone had to be up and dressed, all beds had to be made, and everyone had to be finished with breakfast before any presents were opened. Talk about torture for a small child!

    Lynn’s caption:

On Christmas morning at the farm, the deal was that the kids could open one gift and then we had to wait for everyone to have breakfast. We gulped down our eggs and toast so the kids could get started, but Grandma wasn’t about to eat fast. In fact, she chewed so slowly it drove us crazy. The kids stood next to her watching her jaws working up and down, up and down. I wanted to grab her by the nose and chin and make her chew faster: “Eat, Grandma–EAT!!!” She worked each wedge of toast, each crumb of bacon, into her mouth in dreary, intolerable slow motion. Suddenly, the kids took charge. They roared over to the tree and began to divide up the loot. A “Santa” was chosen, and before Grandma had sipped her coffee, the opening began. As I recall, Grandma was largely oblivious to the commotion going on around her and so a new Christmas tradition was born: everyone has to have breakfast…except Grandma.

Surprising that Michael Patterson was more like “Moinkel Porkerson” all this time, yet he shows better restraint than the girls until the seventh panel.
