I learned during my teens to never put anything valuable in my hip pocket. I found out, the hard way, how easy it is to pick. Later on, when I stayed with some cousins in Brooklyn, NY, I felt that I had to fight temptation, while riding the subway, because I saw so many guys who were standing in the car with wallets bulging in their hip pockets.
