I am forever grateful to the mother whose name I do not remember who let me pile into her station wagon along with her daughter and a bunch of other girls from our high school who were more or less going the same way — home before the Great Snowstorm of 1967 rendered us school-bound. I got home in the teeth of wind-driven snow and spent three days on my own with the dog, as my parents were stuck at work, the flight kitchen and employee cafeteria of a major airline, feeding people who were also stuck. Great memory!
Alice continues the set-up exposition for the beginning of the story of Cul de Sac.
It’s too bad, I guess, that she wasn’t able to book a seat in Mom’s extremely neutral van. Maybe Mrs. Ritter got Alice’s place in the confusion (there’s always confusion)….

Try WinCo instead, Mrs Ritter, for the prices seem lower than Safeway or Fred Meyer.
