It’s not just climate change, it’s unregulated and poorly planned development. Take away all the natural drainage for a very flat area and replace with miles and miles of track houses. This is what you get.
The problem is that communities haven’t got the message…or don’t want to get the message. Orrin Pilkey, an expert on coastal geology and dynamics, has been talking for years about how to build and how NOT to build on the Outer Banks. He might as well have been whistling in the wind.
Brilliant! Houston has been accused of having no zoning laws! Houston, which had a history of flooding long before harvey, must change. Also, Americans who have had a history of polluting our environment, must change. Even if they had more regulations in Houston and elsewhere, it would have been bad, but maybe not as bad. At least they didn’t have to deal with a levee breach, as in New Orleans, which made the event more sudden, as opposed to the violent nonstop rain and storm surge, which was bad enough. Also, we have gotten better at communication since Katrina, back in 2005.
Blaming this flood on “climate change” is sad excuse. Building in a swamp is unfortunately the real reason. And.. the rebuilding (in this same swamp) will start again…some folk just don’t learn.
I don’t care what caused Harvey, but, the fact that we have representatives not conservatively (small c) preparing for events like this is disheartening.
If Holland can solve the problem of building below sea level, there must be Solutions. They might be expensive, but they are solvable. Maybe if you’re going to live in a swamp, you should live on a houseboat or a house on stilts, but for crying out loud you don’t want to live in a house that will get flooded every time there’s a hurricane, torrential raining or a flood. If you live below sea level or in a swamp, there is going to be flooding for one reason or another, otherwise you wouldn’t need flood insurance. I don’t know whether insurance covers hurricanes.
Good luck convincing a Reich-winger the size of the storm was directly affected by the pollution they are allowing into our environment. I was told I must believe in Unicorns for suggesting there is a link between the size and frequencies of hurricanes and pollution. But if the increase in mega-storms is not because of scientifically proven man made pollution, then what did Texas do to make God so mad?

Fake news! Didn’t a GOP congressperson bring a snowball into the capital building once to disprove climate change?

It’s also said that these fools,Upon reaching the ocean-shoreAnd having seen how the skyWas reflected in the blue tide below,
Believed that the seaMust be Heaven, and in they plungedWith faith in GodAnd all were drowned.
