My dad just left copies of “Consumer’s Reports” lying around where I could find them. Of course, in the ‘60s, their idea of the perfect used car was, if memory serves, a three year-old Plymouth Valiant, with “three-on-the-tree”, a slant-six engine and absolutely NO power accessories They said that, unless you lived in someplace like Southern Florida, you didn’t need air conditioning and that “gimmicks” like “Cruise Control” were a total waste of money! Needless to say, I quickly realized that there were adults out there that obviously lived in an alternate universe where flagellation and the wearing of ‘hair shirts" was the norm! I still marvel at peoples’ ability for self-disillusionment.
