If there was any doubt that jails are horrific places that only serve to debase and dehumanize people, let the Milwaukee County Jail serve as a prime example. Over the last few years, there have been deaths of several inmates at the jail as well as hideous allegations of abuse of pregnant women during their incarceration. Meanwhile, Sheriff David Clarke remains completely unbothered—following Donald Trump and the Republicans around the country, parroting conservative talking points and making himself the go-to face of their party, despite being a Democrat.
And at what point is it that a person becomes responsible for their lot in life? The government can only give you money for so long before you are totally enabled.
Being poor (not being born into poverty) is more often a result of your choices than it is anything else. The person, the individual, has to make the choices that lead properly to getting onto ones’ own feet on the road to self-sufficiency.
You can call him all the names you want, but instead of addressing what he is saying, you insult the person stating it. Listen to the entirety of what he says – not the spoon-fed snippets and sound bites that push a particular agenda, especially one that you subscribe to.
I invite our resident believers in bootstraps to go live in the inner city with the same resources as the middle quintile of existing residents. I’m sure their meteoric rise will be an inspiration to all.
