Radical-Knight says: I wondered where the idea for the Burma Shave signs came from.    margueritem* says:  ~ {Don’t want to be}   {Like this dead slave?}   { Better buy some}   {Burma Shave.}    Creative but a bit gruesome!   0019 PDT [0719z]

Not exactly unknown. US leased airbases from Pakistan in 1950’s, in exchange for giving Pakistani military weapons and upgrading these airbases to NATO standard. The leases were non-renewed in 1969 after LBJ slapped embargo against both India and Pakistan for 1965 war (which Pakistan started assuming “cakewalk” victory over unprepared and poorer-armed India–only to be given a shoveback to its pre-war de-facto borders).

In the (in)famous U-2 incident, the aircraft shot down by Soviets had taken off from Peshawar.

And, it was an open-secret that CIA was transporting heroin stateside from Pak airbases in 1980’s (did Reagan want to perpetuate the “War On Drugs”?).
