If he eats it up, and maybe wants a little more, it is praise. If he only eats part of it and does not want any more, it is an insult. In other words, what he does with it is more important than what he says.
Reminds me of an old Dave Berg strip from Mad magazine. Newlywed wife goes off on her husband for being critical when he says, about her cooking, “It’s not like my mother’s.” After she’s done with her tirade, he explains, “My mother was a lousy cook.”
