Learning science is learning the language of the Devil.
You learn liberal agenda items like ‘hormones’ and ‘DNA,’ ‘neuron wiring’ and ‘genetic permutations.’ Then you might actually be open to treating different people with understanding. Devil’s talk.
It’s fun to mock people that let religious groups tell them to fear natural history, but my experience is that most of these “superior” people just turn around and let political groups tell them to fear genetically modified foods and carbon dioxide.
Very true. Education also suffers when science is suppressed because it challenges accepted scientific ideas. Like when nutrition science constantly dismisses or demonizes evidence that a diet high in sugar, grains and starchy foods is to blame for the current level of obesity (not meat and fat).
I love this quote:
“This is the foundation of all. We are not to imagine or suppose, but to discover, what nature does or may be made to do.” - Francis Bacon.
Reading articles on Robotics in war, Aviation industry switching to alternate fuel sources as THEY know petroleum is finite, looked up at Jupiter last night with its moons, and checked out some deep space photos of events billions of light year away, that must have happened of course billions of years BEFORE “the big Dude” created the universe- right.
The education view of the right isn’t just “don’t study”, but DON’T THINK- AT ALL!!
Science is based on a belief in the opinion that truth & reality can be determined & verified through careful observation & controlled experimentation. This faith is flawed by the assumption that there are no magical dæmons capable of altering carbon14 levels to make that mastadon bone look older than the established age of the world.
“It’s that great idea. That radical idea of Judeo-Christianity, that man is created in the image of God. So if you have world history books that downplay Christianity - Judeo-Christianity - and it doesn’t even make it in the table of contents, I think there’s a great concern,” McLeroy said.

“One comment it was Jade who brought religion into this in so doing showed her own attitude”
I wonder why ”according to my beliefs being gay is a choice and the science behind it is merely the liberal agenda, and since I think it’s a choice and we have legislative majorities, we’re going to make sure that the LGBT community remains second class citizens” might affect my attitude?
What I’m betting is you’re going to try and spin it to be an anti-religious attitude. Fine by me. The truth is it is is an issue with religion in politics, as they are so often contradictory with actual behavior, but don’t let the truth stop you.
Sooky Rottweiler says;

SHE CAN’T LOOK LIKE BOTH!!!
Your God is usually portrayed as white…if the same God was usually portrayed as black or asian, you’d have the same problem, too.
Church – you are aware, I suppose, that there is a major effort on the part of some groups to impose the teaching of so-called “creation science” in public schools?
“Ok fine jade how did it become a religion in politics right after my post. ”
Your post talks about Democrats and education. Republicans also have a view on education. They feel that there should be more Judeo-Christian religion in the curriculum, abstinence only education, and that any acceptance of same-sex marriage will lead to children “being taught that being gay is acceptable.” If a Rightie points out Democrat educational failings and a Leftie points out Republican educational failings, where’s the disconnect?
On the subject of education, of course, Google News had some articles on Texas Board of Education and their belief that their textbooks are not pro-“Judeo-Christian” enough and demand a revisionist history.
“Is it possible you can try to look at things other then being Gay and victim? ”
Sure, when DOMA, and DADT are removed thus removing gays from a second-class citizenship status, I’ll really have nothing else to harp on, will I? Until then, sure, it’s very easy to think there’s no problem when it doesn’t affect you.
church – My point was that fundamentalists are a pretty powerful force in US society – whereas your note suggested (with some pretty strong language) that so far as you can tell they are pretty rare. I think you know better. But perhaps I misinterpreted your note.
Hi guys, just curious here. http://www.usgovernmentspending.com/useducationspending20.html has education spending at 1024 billion USD. On the other hand, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010UnitedStatesfederal_budget has the budget of the DoEducation at 47 billion USD. So where are the remaining almost a trillion dollars coming from, if these are all public expenses?
Christian and muslim fundamentalism works just like cults. Everytime we see a cult commit mass suicide, people are surprised to see that smart people who seemed sane are among the victims. They invented a scary word for what they think happened; brainwashing.
In fact, it’s more simple than that. Generations ago, happiness wasn’t considered part of this life, so people were not frustrated when they were not as happy-looking as dancers in a musical. Now it is not only part of life, it is something you must have. If you’re not happy, you’re seen as a failure. Almost every ad we see, we are promised happiness. You only see happy people (or people who are becoming happy) in ads, everywhere!
Then upper class people think; I have money, I am thin and healthy, then why am I not happy? Maybe I need religion. So they turn to religion. And if they are still happy (for reasons they don’t dare to see) they think that maybe God doesn’t know they turned to him…so they turn to more and more radical faiths.
Mixed in with the satire, Colbert probably made some of the most valid points before a Congressional committee in the last 25 years. As he stated, it only took ONE DAY to realize that field work is literally back-breaking, and that no “couch potato” “average American” is going to take the job.
While some of the Congresspersons had to restrain themselves from laughing WITH (not at) the accuracy of the satire, others, notably the Republicans, “just didn’t get it”, because they were WAY too removed from the real issues.
Steven Colbert is an astute political observer who actually did go out and do the work of migrant workers, which makes him more of an expert on the subject than most members of the Congressional committee.
“Education suffers when special interest groups inform students that…” creationism “… is nothing more than some people’s “beliefs” and “opinions” and they are free to choose their own.”
if i remember correctly, dr. c, you said that you tell your students that creationism is bogus and science is the truth. I think you could look at your statement(s) from the opposite perspective. yes?
^I was referencing his presidential bid, not his term as governor. And why are you bringing up the old, tired, and frankly the new position of the Republican party? History shows that the racist were at one point with the Democrats, but they’ve long since given up on those guys since they helped pass the civil rights act. Stop living in the past and get some new info.

Strangely, the Women’s movement degraded education. Used to be the brightest women went into teaching. Now they go into many other fields.
