This toon is done with reference to The Garden of Earthly Delights, the tryptic by Bosch, now in the Prado in Madrid. The irony here is that art historians can’t agree whether the painting is bemoaning the loss of earthly pleasures in the fall from grace, or alternately warning of the evils of the flesh. I saw the painting earlier this year on a business trip to Madrid. It was far less impressive to my modern eyes than it must have been to the Flemish in the 1500’s. We have become sated with vivid imagery, and this old image no longer seems either shocking or particularly gruesome or disturbing. Trump, however IS shocking, and it’s his character that’s troubling, not whatever “policies” he pretends to support in the moment. Sociopathic narcissism has no associated political policies. It’s just a sick consciousness stumbling around seeking validation to counter a very deep well of self-loathing. That’s Trump. It would be very sad if he wasn’t so dangerous.
