The word ‘Indian’ was a white European’s description of the natives of what he thought was India. So offensive when directed at a group of people thus labelled.
Okay, so call them the Cleveland Native Americans and come up with a more politically correct image. The front office only cares about the bottom line and if the fans start voting with their feet and boycotting games, then they would make a change. If the fans don’t care, the owners don’t care.
I recall reading somewhere that Chief Wahoo’s wide grin was fashioned after Bob Feller’s. Not convinced that’s true but Rapid Robert could flash the pearly whites with the best of them and I’ve seen pictures where I could imagine someone thinking that.
“Never meant to cause offense,” whether true or false, doesn’t change the fact that it now does cause offense. It’s not punishment that’s intended. It’s correcting the situation.
Basically, the Chief Wahoo image causes offense among those who are looking for things that supposedly offend themselves or other.
One of my brothers has a cabinet that was in my bedroom as a child. It has a decal of Chief Wahoo. He has kept the original paint job solely to preserve the Chief’s image, as a memento of our being fans of Bill Veeck’s Indians as children.

I will reiterate what I said yesterday. The name Cleveland Indians isn’t offensive.
The cartoon image is. It has become a symbol of a white society insensitive to people of other racial and ethnic origins.
Times change and so should the Cleveland logo.

And the NFL Viking logo of Scandinavian American heritage is somehow NOT offensive? Oh, wait. The caricature is of a kind of white guy, so it’s ok.
