Wait, isn’t that ageism or some other “ism”? She’s being way too familiar with him.

We are blessed with numerous family restaurants in our area, some with waitresses who’ve been there as long as I can remember. They practically have the food on the table before their regulars appear. “Hon” and “shug” from them is a compliment. There was one young one, not too long ago. She gave my husband, in his late 40s and easily twenty years her senior, a “hon” when taking his order. At first it jarred, but you know what? She didn’t seem entirely comfortable with it, but she wanted to be part of the sisterhood, so we smiled as if she was 60 with a pencil stuck in her teased hair. She knows that what keeps us coming back is those over-the-counter friendships. So, Carry on, “hon”-bearers!

I love diners and the waitresses there. I was making fun of the PC atmosphere that tries to turn any familiarity into some form of abuse. Ageism, sexism, racism, and all the other ‘isms that try to take the comfortable humanity out of enjoyable interactions. Please call me “hon”, or “sug”, or whatever you like, and be happy doing it. More coffee, please. And don’t forget to tip your waitress.

The restaurants where the waitresses call you “hon” are usually the ones that serve the best food for the buck.

Our diner girls call us by our FIRST names and we them! And last year we were invited to have Thanksgiving there and partake of their homemade food! Great fun!

If I got all that I’d guess I’m not long for this world.
