A friend of mine – biochemist, not in the pharma industry, surprisingly, once said “Each pill costs pennies to make, but you have to remember – that first pill, the one that came from years of work, research, stringent trials, cost billions.”

So I can understand why medicine can be costly. BUT, there’s nothing in that theory to negate the vast profits made by drug companies, the fact that they sell the same medicine in different countries for a fraction of what they charge in the USA, or in the case of the EpiPen – massively up the cost despite the product having been on the market for almost three decades.

The research cost can be as much as 60 to 90 million dollars, if they can not recoup this cost there would be no new research on new drugs.
