Actually, Gov. Bel Edwards asked Pres. Obama to stay away. He didn’t want police, air security and other first responders taken away from the job to watch over the President. I wish Trump had listened.
Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser, a Republican who frequently criticizes Mr. Obama, said in an interview that federal officials had done “an excellent job” responding to the floods. “They actually do care,” he said.
Obama wisely stayed away and let them do their work without his “tour” disrupting operations, which FEMA was handling quite well on the federal side. Coming in after things were under control wasn’t really necessary either, as he didn’t fill any sandbags, but he didn’t unpack a truck load (okay four boxes) of Play Doh either.
The criticism over Bush and Katrina had much more to do with the absolute failure of Homeland Security to respond adequately. As far as the Governor is concerned Obama has responded very well to all their requests for assistance.
