There is a lot of controversy on the subject; much to much to go into here. One of the largest factors is likely the lake is getting warmer and food for the hatchlings is getting scarcer. Is this because of climate change? Maybe, but more likely it is a combined factor as a result of invasive Zebra Mussels. This creature is eating a lot of plankton that are necessary for Walleye hatchlings, and this is also causing the water to be clearer. It is not uncommon on a bright day to see 15 feet or more to the bottom of the lake.
Some think a clearer lake should be a good thing, but it also allows sunlight to penetrate deeper and this also can increase lake temperatures and increase weed growth. Unfortunately, Walleye and other similar fish need colder waters to thrive, not warmer.
Regarding the spring spawning issue, many locals put all the blame on the Native Americans who are netting many fish in the early spring. Is this having an impact? Of course it is, but it is not the only impact as I pointed out and may not even be the most significant. Emotions are very high, and it depends on who you talk to…
