8mm projectors were pretty common in middle-class American homes then. They were mainly for home movies, but there were companies that sold 8mm prints of old silent films for the home market. The Sears Christmas Catalog for 1947 lists a Revere projector for $120. My family had a camera, floodlamp unit, projector, screen, editing bay, and titling unit, and some of their oldest home movies went back to the War.

Seems a pretty fancy toy for this family of modest means. Especially from 1949.

Maybe Fritzi has a giraffe friend that comes over to hang the laundry for her.

Home movie? “Ah, yes. Uncle Ko-Ko. He ran away and joined the movies.”
