Back in the days of VCRs, we had a shop in town. I rented a movie, watched it and returned it, and the next time I was in the owner told me I had to pay $80 to replace the tape because it was damaged. He said the next person who rented it said it was all snowy and scratchy. I had a high-end 4 head hi-fi VCR, and told him the tape was probably already like that and my machine just played it fine. He said I either had to pay for the tape, or bring my VCR down so he could clean it (for a hefty fee.) We argued and he kept saying the tape was ruined, etc. I left and never returned to his shop. My friend still went in, and the store had a bin where they sold leftover tapes. There was the tape I had “ruined” for sale. My friend called the guy out, but he didn’t care. He went out of business not long after, because he pulled that crap all the time.
The guy who owned the other shop in town was a much cooler dude. We became friends, and he would let me have the advance screener copies of upcoming releases. Kind of a big deal back then.

If they ever watch “Two Lane Blacktop” they’ll sneak it into the after hours return slot, hoping they don’t get caught and have to buy a replacement.
