Antiques Roadshow originally decided to visit Crustwood Illinois to give the program a bit of comic relief.

They figured they’d see clown paintings, Avon bottles, and plastic reproductions of hanging Tiffany lampshades, probably advertising Miller High Life….

and it would all be good for a laugh.

But after seeing, besides Burl’s platter, three antique stoneware bowls that had been chipped in the dishwasher,

a table lamp made from a rare Song dynasty vase, a set of throw pillows cut from a medieval French tapestry,

three antique gold rings set in a Lucite paperweight, and a genuine 17th century table that had been painted pink to match the drapes…..

The appraisers, producers, on-air personalities and production crew all went on a bender….

and PBS eventually had to provide them all with group therapy for clinical depression.

    Never again.

Well I can tell you that in today’s market, at auction, your platter is worth a laugh. Now that clown painting. That could be worth something in the right market, and we just happen to be in the right market.
