    jfm, no they were not; they were republics in the Soviet Union.

    Why is it that the show is called “Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader,” when it only tests knowledge, which has nothing to do with how smart one is?

    I can still name all 50 states in alphabetical order off the top of my head (I know a song). Don’t ask me their capitals, though…

    Since the US and, later on, all of NATO and the UN never recognized the annexation of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, a case can be made that they should not be considered “former Soviet republics” but, rather, “former occupied territories”.*-
