Duh-huh. Republicans love to borrow and spend just as much as they accuse Democrats of it. We had a Republican congress Congress for part of the Bush Administration, and they still needed to raise the legal debt ceiling several times.

@Jase99 – Agreed. This isn’t just a Democrat problem. It’s a political establishment problem where Democrats and Republicans alike love to give out freebies and gimmees to the voters at the expense of people who can’t vote for them; namely our children, grandchildren and so on.

Don’t get me wrong – There are times when deficit spending makes sense but only when the spending is an investment in the future i.e. roads and other infrastructure.

But we have too many in the country who want all the benefits of a first world environment but want to pay taxes like they live in a third world kleptocracy.

The problem is the focus in on getting re-elected. Both sides solve short term problems by borrowing and kick the long term can down the road. They lie to themselves by assuming rosy investment rates and low interest rates. It is political musical chairs. Unfortunately sooner or later when the bill comes due, it is nearly impossible to find a solution that doesn’t badly hurt people. In Illinois the taxes are going up because they can’t borrow any more to cover the pension deficit. The “people” do their part by not holding the politicians feet to the fire on long term issues.

When you support 1000 or so military bases around the world and when you invade and occupy countries far from home, you are going to have massive spending and rising debt unless taxes are raised. Basic logic and basic mathematics. Spend that money at home on infrastructure, research, education, health, and social programs and watch the economy bloom and social problems decrease. Not as chest-beating, fear-creating, and adrenalin rushing as screaming jets and exploding bombs, but more effective for welfare of the people.

I’ll take the Democrats “tax and spend” over the Republicans “no tax and spend.”

It would help if the Cheney/Bush war to grab Iraq’s oil was put ON BUDGET….

Gorrell must have put the unfunded war in Afghanistan, the unfunded invasion of Iraq, the unfunded secret earmarks, the unfunded Medicare Part D, and the unfunded Bush stimulus all into the etch-a-sketch.

And, I guess the unfunded tax cuts for the wealthy don’t count as spending, either.

The problem we’re leaving our children is not debt, it’s climate change. And American conservatives are the only conservatives in the world who refuse to look reality in the face. The science is firm. But conservatives are as willfully ignorant about science as Bob Gorrell is about economics.

“Democrats buy things for the kids and make the kids pay for them. Republicans buy things for THEMSELVES and make the kids pay for them.”Spot on! The GOP is far worse than the Democrats as far as running a deficit. They cut taxes & give money to megacorps & Wall Street at the expense of programs that actually benefit working people.Amnesia will set in the moment a Republican sits in the Oval Office.

@ARodney – I’m sure some conservatives are willfully ignorant about the threat of climate change just like some liberals stupidly overstate the threat that it poses to most Americans. I say most intentionally because I recognize the threat of rising seas to people living in low lying communities. But for many of us it just isn’t that big of a deal.

All the doom and Gloom the scientists conjured up 15 years ago has not come to pass.

I’m sure in your Eco-friendly bubble the threat of Global warming is paramount. But many of us worry more about getting the economy back up an running so that our kids and grandkids will have jobs and economic prospects.

That bill was mostly run up by Reagan tax breaks, and his, and the Bush boys’ wars.(and non-wartime spending to the MIC to prepare for more wars)

Under a Republican administration, our kids won’t have to pay off the deficit because they’ll be lying dead in the deserts of Iran.
