Joan: You look happy.
Val: I won the lottery.
Joan: You DID?!
Val: Practically. MOM'S coming home!
Joan: Only a single working mom would equate having a live-in babysitter to winning the lottery.
Val: I know, right?!
She HAS a life of her own. What makes you think she minds living in the same house with her daughter and granddaughters? She’s not tied down by them. Even when she’s there, she has time and freedom to pursue her own interests.
I agree with Calista! Val didn’t ask Evie to come home; Evie volunteered and Val even made a point of asking her if she was sure she really wanted to come home, don’t come home on account of me, etc…. If I was her age, I’d want to spend at least some time with my kids and grandkids and not travel all year long! :)
Through most of human history, multiple generations lived together. It’s only in modern societies in fairly recent times that families have dissolved into scattered small groups.
Anyway, Evie has total freedom to do whatever she likes- and she is. She seems to miss her family and she actually enjoys her granddaughters. I had a wonderful grandmother who loved having us grandkids around, and I had an evil grandmother that seemed to dislike all children- well she kind of disliked all people.
Evie seems more the loving being around grandkids type. And her grandchildren will turn out far better having her than some “babysitter”.
I LOVED the time I got to spend with grandchildren when they were old enough to learn but not so old (HS years) as to be bored with a grandma’s stuff. Now that some are in college they are somewhat returning to that stage again. I value ANY time when interaction can be beneficial to them ;-) I LOVE my freedom, but also want to spend time with my 6 grandkids when they are in a “learning” stage.

I totally agree with mplsstreetrwy…Evie deserves a life of her own; she raised her family already…

Val’s dancing is SO GREAT. She should dance all the time!
