Total cost to age 18 in 2015: $245,340 per CNN. Pay up, kiddo.

Assuming they buy at least some of Marigold’s food, there’s that as well.

Fundamental law of work: (value to civilization) x (pay) = constant). In other words, people who are essential to a functioning society, like nurses, teachers, garbage collectors, most artists, etc., don’t get paid squat, while CEOs, lawyers, financial speculators, etc., get paid enormous amounts of money to offset the inherent uselessness (or active counter-productivity) of their jobs. Having worked in the software field, and made a pretty decent middle-class living, I will say that programming is closer to CEO than it is to teacher in terms of actual value to human civilization.

I’m assuming that Pheobe hasn’t considered the value of things that her mother does around the home to the equation. Stay at home parents really don’t get the respect they deserve.

While my son was growing up I did several work scenarios at different times — computer services from home; part-time outside; full time outside. The more I was away the more erratic our home orbit became. We need to remember that it’s only been about one hundred years or so that the majority of people in this country began working outside their home (non-agrarian society); and much more recent that wives / mothers left home to work. As an observation, as a nation we are fatter; our children are sicker physically and weaker emotionally; and families are under enormous stress because, ironically, while family life is being thrown overboard either because of economic stress or in favor of materialism, Family Values are being held out like a carrot in front of a starving, over-worked cart horse.

So yes, Phoebe really needs a quick life lesson on what her mother does while she’s “sponging.” After fifty years of “feminism” that cultural brain-washing makes my skin crawl. Sorry, Dana and all, to get so heavy.

I work from home but my income wouldn’t hold up the family so my husband has a decent job outside of the home. It works well for us, so far. My son gets to come home to me instead of aftercare or a babysitter and my husband gets a somewhat clean house and dinner every night. (Somewhat clean because I still have to work 40 hours a week even if it is from home.) It’s a perfect balance for us and I hope to be able to continue it for as long as we can.

Unfortunately that is what many folks assume that a person who stays home is. A sponge. Also a SaHP have been called parasites. As well as other uncomplimentary names.
