I have 3 older brothers. When we moved to a new house in 1972, my parents put the twins in one of the upstairs bedrooms (my 2 older sisters got the other one) and my father finished a part of the cellar for another bedroom for my other brother. One of the twins was a bit of a neatnik while the other one was sloppy, as was the other brother. My mother decided to put the two sloppy brothers in the upstairs room in the hopes that they would get sick of all of the sloppiness and neaten up, while also rewarding the neatnik twin with his own room. It didn’t work. They both remained sloppy. (Side note: my baby brother & I shared a room next to my parents’ room on the main floor.)
I had a bedroom every bit as messy as Jeri’s, then one day my mom made me clean it top to bottom. I liked it so much I decided I wanted my room to always look that way and I kept it up till I left home. Now with a husband it’s not so easy to keep things as neat as I’d like but I’ll always remember how much I enjoyed having a neat room.
