I remember my dogs’ reaction when my son was born. When we came home from the hospital (also on a Nov 15, LOL) the older sheltie kept running up and down the hall smelling for footprints. He knew there was another person in the house.
After that, he pretty much treated our son the same as he treated the sheltie puppy we had: a lot like Sophie treats Doug.
Joe that’s “proof” of absolutely nothing. The idea that parents “bring a baby home” from the hospital, which comes as a surprise to those (usually siblings) who stayed home is an old one. That’s how Charlie Brown reacted to the birth of Sally, how Lucy reacted to the birth of Rerun. It’s an old theme.
Until and unless Anderson makes some specific mention of Doug being anything other than the biological offspring of “Mom” and “Dad”, there’s no reason to believe he’s adopted. (Not that there would be anything wrong with that.)
By the way Joe all Brian may be trying to show is that a dog sees a baby come home and doesn’t know the source, so he reacts accordingly. This is to much work. Why does a comic need explaining, you just appreciate it for what it is.
What difference would it make if Doug was adopted?
Maybe he wasn’t, maybe he was.
I am sure Sofie has no idea where Doug came from.
The point is, Doug is part of her pack now.
Doug sitting up is probably just comic license.
Newborns don’t do much that would make for an interesting comic.
In comics, time, size and behavior don’t need to follow real life rules. The best jokes often bend the rules.

I think it’s so cute how the parents bathe Sophie and Doug together just like they were brother and sister

Sheesh!!! There is a lot of over analyzing going on here. Let’s just appreciate Brian’s mind and art.

For the last week over in “Pooch Cafe”, we’ve had two dogs in the birth canal arguing over which should get to be born first.
