It is an issue in medical professions. When I went in for cardiac catheterization, they sent a med student/intern down with me to observe. Once we got into the cath lab, the MD there took the kid aside and quietly told him “There’s going to be a lot of blood. Are you going to be okay with that?” The kid nodded yes, but the MD still had him stand off to the side, out of the way and out of my (limited) line of sight. Just in case. I didn’t hear the sound of anyone fainting and hitting the floor, so I guess he held up.

At least the surgeon was trying to be kind. He could have made a more cutting remark.
