When the confederate battle flag flew over government property, it said to many that the entire state was bigoted. Now that it will only fly on private property, it’s just an indicator that those individual residents are bigoted rather than the entire state as a whole.
The toon puts the racist treason flag into what looks like a recycling bin. I wonder what the new racist symbol will be once the flag has been recycled?
The flag is only a symbol, but symbols do matter. In this case, I think we are seeing that the white Southern power structure is finally repudiating slavery and Jim Crow. It was good to see Nikki Haley saying that the flag should come down. She and others like her deserve credit. Now the whole country, not just the South, needs to work on the vestiges of racism which still remain.
