What an incredible strip. She writes a poem and is asked to do a reading; then is invited to be on the radio? Are you serious? Do you know how many people have struggled to have their poetry recognized for years? Does she really think that recognition is this easy? What a slap in the face this is for all the people who have taken classes and been frustrated for so long.
As a radio guy for the past 20+ years, I can tell you Elly’s not being asked for an interview about her poetry…it’s the building. We love tilting-at-windmills stuff like this, especially when the tilters come out ahead and we can take credit for bringing attention to the cause du jour…looks great when it’s time to renew that old FCC license.
There were some differences between this comic strip and others, namely that Lynn Johnston blurred the lines between fantasy and reality by using her own family. Other cartoonists made up their strips. Calvin and Hobbes are fictional. The concept that Lynn Johnston one day signed a contract and never had any worries ever again is not entirely accurate. In 1993 her popularity took a huge nosedive. Fans left in droves, and sales of her books dropped like a rock. Does anyone know what caused this plummet? Whatever the case, it goes to show the customer is the most important aspect, and readers voiced their dissatisfaction by ceasing to read the strip.

Oh, if Elly did “brilliant” on stage, how brilliant is she going to be on the radio? Stay tuned!
