According to my inflation calculator, $5 in 1955 dollars is worth almost $44 today.

I often think of my childhood spending in terms of comic books, and 1955 wasn’t a banner year for them. But as late as September of 1963, I could buy every superhero and sci-fi comic published by both Marvel and DC for a total of $3.81, tax included. That was the month Avengers #1 and X-men #1 hit the news stands. The first giant sized Fantastic Four Annual was also on sale. Over at DC the first crossover between the Justice League and the Golden Age Justice Society was happening. That just scratches the surface of the wonder of that late summer of comics. Buying the same number of like – sized DC and Marvel books this month would cost somewhere around $180.00, books now usually four to five dollars each. My monthly allowance as a thirteen year old in 1963 was five dollars… the amount of Nancy’s bonanza.
