Faverite opening stunt; turn jar upside down, whap it downwardly, flatly and firmly on kitchen counter. Works every time. Doing such generates a ton or more of force that will loosen said cap pretty goodly. Cautions: operation should be done while sober, never done to beer bottles, or cans of flammable fluids/recipes/chemical experiments and never, never swung at arms length…
Late comment which few if any will see:When opening any previously unopened jar, pressing DOWN on the lid while turning will normally solve the problem. No heat, nor water (nor “shocking”) required. Most lids have an elastic seal which will compress with some downward force, allowing the jar to open as though it had already been opened.
I gently tap the sides of the lid against the counter-top… it loosens the seal and the lid comes off easily. I have tried the hot water trick in the past, but find this is easier. I had never heard of pressing down before, and with my arthritis, doubt that I could get enough pressure (I have a hard enough time with adult proof caps on medicine bottles).

I saw a practical tip the other day. If you put on one of those dish washing gloves to grip the top of a jar, it will open easier.
