I still get a weird feeling reading comics where Shoe & Perfessor are both birds yet they discuss eating other birds.
Well it’s “only a comic” I suppose, and and I still enjoy reading it!
I’ve wondered about that myself. I figure the “Shoe” universe is like Narnia, where some of the animals possess intelligence, the power of speech and wear clothing, while others are still mindless brutes (but tasty, tasty mindless brutes).
You never see Gopher Mc Nuggets any more.
