My father was city alderman for a few years back in the late ‘60s/early ’70s. The year he finally lost the election was the year someone actually ran against him. He was too honest and wouldn’t promise a lot of pie-in-the-sky promises, like his opponent.
I agree, running for office is no piece of cake. You’re likely to lose, you’re likely to spend a lot of your own money, and trying to stay clean while doing it is a lot like trying to shovel out a pig pen without getting any on you.
Nobody said it’s “easy”. What people are saying is that it’s the inherent nature of politics to change an “intelligent, compassionate, ethical person” into something else. Pointing out this fact is not “whining”.
Most politicians are rich, thus they can’t relate to anyone but the 1% perhaps if the rest of the non rich people actually were elected things would be different.
The trick here is that the offoces that you CAN win are the ones wiith little pwer to make any significant difference. The offices that have that ability are best characterized by a line from a paraphrased Glen Campbell song “there’ll be a lot of compromising on the road to your horizon”…

Politics, from the Greek word “poly” meaning “many,” and “tics” – blood sucking insects.

We don’t elect them to be corrupt, they learn it from their peers.

Always thought Tom Coburn was solid. Wish he had been a senator from Georgia.

What you’re saying can be reduced to two words: Power corrupts.
