Yup. And the car never makes that funny noise when you get to the mechanic.

My own daughter did this as a toddler, screamed and screamed until we got in to see the Dr., then she was all happy smiles….and I felt like the boy who cried wolf.

I know that feeling, Marg, over here it can be even worse because they don’t have baby Tylenol. When one of my kids had a fever I gave her a dose and by the time we got to the hospital the fever was gone. I had to explain what Tylenol was and showed the doctor the bottle. What really scared me was when the doctor said “wow - we don’t have anything that good here.” WHAT??? “Here” was the best hospital in three cities!

    Been there also…

When you have to explain Tylenol, that is scary, ejcapulet. Although I’m sure there are other reasons that you like living there, that would be enough to make me start looking around for a new place to live.

They may question us when that happens, but only twice out of 3 kids was I ever wrong about an ear/sinus infection, and the happy, playing, smiling baby didn’t fool them when she had nasty pus in her ear (and yes, thank goodness for baby ibuprofin, which saved us from much ear infection and teeth pain)

I’m sure there are many, many parents who can relate to this strip! My son did the same thing ejcapulet’s child did. I gave him the Tylenol and by the time we got seen by the physician, he was better. Of course, it just masked the symptoms and when it wore off he was poorly again…it was a cycle until he got rid of his bug.

Our dog did that too! My parents “doggiesat” him until we found a new home when we moved away, and one morning my dad found him shaking and shivering and curled in a ball. Totally unlike anything he had previously done. No interest in food or anything else. So my dad made an appointment to see the vet for that afternoon, but later on the dog came around, so dad cancelled the appt. About 12 am, he checked again on the dog before he went to bed, and the dog was worse!!! So, he called the vet at home, and had to do an emergency appt. The vet was not pleased at all, as he had cancelled the earlier appt. And, as soon as they got in the car, the dog perked up! They go to the vet, and she’s there in her bedroom slippers looking mad as all get out, and there’s nothing wrong with the dog! She charged them a $95 call out fee…I don’t blame her for charging a fee, but my dad was not impressed. We offered to pay him back, but he said “nope, it’s a lesson bought and paid for!”…

And, ejcapulet, if you don’t want to move away from where you are living, (I would if they don’t have Tylenol or even know what it is!), then I hope you have a friend or family member who will send you loads of Tylenol to have on hand. :)

You know poor Lizzie is sick when she’s happy that someone who can ‘fix it’ is there.

Mom’s are good for 90%, but sometimes ya just need that extra 10%.

Hope you feel better today Lizzie doll.

ejcapulet, is it fair to ask what country you’re living in?

And yes, I bet nearly all of us have had this experience. Right now I have a High Schooler (who actually loves school) who is sick in bed but with no fever…. It does not ever end.

How come no one has commented on Lizzie being in the front seat of the car–showing how old this strip actually is.

Just like Brenda_fan, I was wondering the same thing about the carseat in the front seat of the car! You can’t do that today because the airbag can kill a young child in the front seat.

I would make the same rule for a child that I make for myself - if I have an appointment with a doctor, I don’t take any medication for a few hours beforehand. As somebody says, it would mask the symptoms.

Specifically, when I go to a dentist and want to tell him where it hurts, I want to be 100% accurate when I scream, “Ouch!”

Of course, this is not the most pleasant way to deal with it.

Pets do that too. They’re sick until you sign the credit card receipt for the doctor visit, then they’re all better.

I can relate to these comics these days. Since reading these my daughter is now sick. Thank you Lizzie. Didn’t know it goes through the computer. Talk about computer viruses. My daughter just got up from a nap. She never naps so we know she’s really sick. 1st thing she did was throw up. Poor girl! She’s been throwing up since this morning.

I wonder if Lizzie’s doctor gives children toys or lollipops after their appointments??? That would certainly make a child happy to see them!

NoahsMama: Was it ever discovered at some other point in time what was wrong with your dog?

I remember taking my eldest to the Doc when he was about 2 1/2. This was our first visit to this particular doctor (our regular doc’s new partner). My kid was talking a mile a minute, trying to play with all the equipment in the office, not sitting still on the examining table. Doc looks at me and says, “So what makes you think he’s sick?” I answered, “He so quiet and subdued.” Doc said, “Um. .ok. you’ve known him longer than I have and if this is subdued…. Lets see if I can get him to sit still long enough to look in his ears.” Doc then took an exam glove, blew it up, tied off the cuff, drew a smiley face on the thumb with a maker. Then handed marker and glove to the kid, told him to finish the drawing and checked out the ears while the little darlin’ was distracted. Kid had a raging ear infection. Doc and I had a wonderful “parent & doctor as partners” relationship for years.

    Hi GretchensMom,

Nope, never did find out what went on. We think it was being in an unfamiliar place, as we always let him in the house with us, and my parents kept him in the workroom in their basement - they don’t allow animals in the main part of the house. So, we think that when he got in the car (familiar, because he always rode in the car with us), he was on “home” ground. It never happened again, and we’re happy to say he’s back with us. Not to say that my parents treated him badly, they didn’t at all - they just have different ideas than we do when it comes to an animal’s place. :) Thanks for asking, though!

@Susan001- funny thing about house calls. The doctors don’t do that anymore, but we have a couple of vets who do.

    NoahsMama:

Glad to hear everything was okay with your dog! I’m a huge dog lover and it pains me greatly to see one sick or suffering in any way (like yours, being upset due to his unfamiliar circumstances and unable to be with you). Our dog is a very loved member of our family and when something’s not right with her, the whole household grinds to a halt until we solve her problem! However, I got lucky where my mom’s concerned – she loves our little one as much as we do so the dog has just as much run of her house as she does ours! :o)
