Men lose more weight than women because usually men weigh more than women.

Unfortunately, Wiley is right on the mark about this weight thing. My husband and I are both of medium build and weigh about the same! Yet, if he says, “I need to lose a few pounds,” Boom! It’s off in no time. Me? I have to walk and walk and walk and walk…and only lose a pound. Like Victoria says, “Aargh! That’s just NOT fair!”

vanity has nothing to do with it. I have very bad knees (one is now metal) and I have to keep my weight down or I’d be in a one of those motorized carts! NO WAY!

    Doctor Toon

My Air Force NCOIC, When involuntarily enrolled in the “Fat Boy” Program (his appellation), would load his fatigue pockets with nuts and bolts before the first weigh-in. In successive weigh-ins he would carry less extra ballast. Thus it would be two or three months before he actually had to get about real weight loss.

In order to stay thin I watch my diet very closely. My wife does too, but is able to eat more food in a day then I do and still stay at 110 pounds.

Some women have an easy time reaching or maintaining their desired weight. We just learn not to broadcast it.

Some men have a hard time losing weight. They’re under less cultural pressure to do so, and are probably less likely to bother, especially with those last few pounds. Those that continue to struggle with their weight don’t talk about it much - not a “guy talk” thing, really.

I’ve fought the battle of the bulge all my life. Twice, I was down to 200 or less since I was 14. The first was when I was 16-17. Doctor stepped in and helped. Went to Parris Island at 185. After the corps, I went to 260 around about. Then went to 300 and went on a diet. Back to 200. Did well for a couple years then fractured a vertabra. Weight started up again until I was at 260 again. When I was 48 I quit smoking and at 49 I quit drinking. I hit 310 in no time. In ‘03 I lost my factory job to China and got a CDL. Now I’m around 350. BP is entirely livable and so are all the rest of my numbers. I’m ble4ssed with the good numbers and cursed with the weight. There is a genetic factor involved but I can’t see why the BP and such are so good. One thing I have learned is that more than walking is needed. Excersize must be to the point of sweat and some pain.

The strip is great Wiley. The tension between the sexes and the generations is right on.

Also, I’ve known several Capt. Eddie’s.

Personally, I’d be checking his scale. I wouldn’t be surprised if Danae had a hand in Joe’s impressive weight loss.

Also, WOW! First non-political strip (whose comments I’d read) that didn’t somehow get turned political.

I think part of the difference is that women are designed to have more body fat and men are designed to be leaner. That is probably a big part in why men usually lose excess weight faster.

Exercise is great for the body, it tones muscles, keeps the cardiovascular system in good shape and makes you feel good, but it is a very inefficient way to loose weight. It takes a twenty minute walk to work off the calories of 1 piece of toast without butter. Skip the toast, keep the walking, or other exercise. Eating and drinking a lot less, is a much better way to lose weight. You might have to get used to being hungry, though.

If he want’s to get into Victoria’s jeans, he’s got to feed her “greasy grit gravy and gizzard greens.” ( Thanks to Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Shel Silverstein.)

At Varnes—Well said. It takes both. One thing the excersize does is help regulate your metabolism. Less food + more excersize=good weight loss.

There are a few medical studies about how women’s bodies are design to hold onto fat more than a man. From an evolutionary standpoint, it makes sense. Doesn’t make me any happier though. :)

I just try to tune out the “ideal” image that media tries to spoonfeed us and keep reminding myself that as long as I’m healthy and can do the things I enjoy, the shape doesn’t matter so much. That’s still a work in progress, though. :)

Nelly55, I empathize! 52+medications+postmenaposal metabolism=weight gain. I tried doing Wii fit for 6 months at least 5 times a week, counted calories to lose 7 pounds. Oh well, now I look like my Aunt Ricky (may she rest in peace).

I reckon I’ll make a few women mad at me. OK, I’ll chance that.

I have no trouble losing weight. These days, maintaining or even trying to gain a couple of pounds seem to give some difficulty. Reason: I’m involved in a job that requires lots of moving and lifting heavy objects. That burns lots of calories, and it can be hard to eat that much. Been holding at 170 these past few weeks, down from a high of 205 three years ago.

IMO, men have a faster metabolism. I should say, some men. Maybe because they tend to have more muscle mass than some women. Muscle burns fat…IDK…

I just have to have some incentive. Really good incentive. LOL
