Those cross words were termed “maladicta.”
And the individual symbols within them have names like “jarns,” “quimp,” “grawlix,” and “nittles.”

I don’t know what it says, but I’m offended.
way i learned it, count the letters and match as well as you can - obviously, he’s saying love, a common four letter word
