Well, you know, since Obama has stated that global warming is happening, it’s obvious that there’s no such thing as global warming.-Fox “news” says so.
While the ’toon IS about drought, which is getting worse, it is only part of the overall problem. But hey, as long as some folks have flooding, and others have drought, it balances out, right?
Okay, time to get serious here.I don’t live there now, but I originally come from Phoenix, Arizona. And global warming or not, there has definitely been a LOCAL climate change there over the past few decades. ( Big reason why I left. )The reason is simple…uncontrolled growth. ‘Build baby, build!’ That’s been the motto of local and state government since I can remember, and the consequences have not been good.When I was a kid, yeah the temps got into the triple digits during the summer, but it was, as they say, a dry heat, and I can’t remember it EVER getting above 110 degrees. Furthermore, soon as the sun went down it would cool off very quickly.That’s not the case any more. All those people moving in have meant more and more new roads…and asphalt has this little habit of retaining heat and only releasing it very slowly.So now, it doesn’t cool off after dark the way it used to..and it stays hotter during the day too. How hot? The big item in Phoenix these days is a swimming pool COOLING system.It’s also a lot more humid in Phoenix than when I was a kid. First thing the new arrivals in the Valley of the Sun do when they move in is try to turn their environment into a little slice of their old midwest home…meaning lawns and golf courses baby, all of which have to be irrigated. And when all that water evaporates, whaddaya think happens?Now combine all that increased water use with a drought…and you have all the makings of a possible disaster.
What the deniers do never seem to realize is that the slowing down of man made global rapid climate change, eventually resulting in stopping this very real and dangerous phenomenon, and finally in even reversing this, is not a difficult thing. All that needs to be done is to slow down and eventually stop most fossil fuel burning for the purposes of energy generation and transportation!
Further, there are several very good reasons for the stopping of the burning of such fuels that have nothing to do with climate change, and are just as important anyway (something that our ultra conservative deniers never seem to even address, let alone refute). These are as follows:
(1) For the US especially, this would mean no longer being dependent in any way upon highly unstable areas of the world for our energy needs. Even our more conservative posters seem to agree that would be a very good thing for the USA!!
(2) Oil is indeed the basis for our very civilization. It is used in machining for both lubrication and cooling during metal cutting processes. It is even the basis for the newer manufacturing methods resulting in carbon fiber materials. It is the base material for the entire petrol chemical industry (especially plastics). It is even the basis for many fertilizers and medicines. So, it is entirely too precious a commodity to our civilization to just burn up into the atmosphere, polluting that very atmosphere in the meantime!!
(3) Of course, it is that pollution of the atmosphere that is in itself a very severe problem for human beings, and even adds a very large amount to our health care costs. Anyone (such as myself) that has any kind of lung difficulties knows this!!
Finally, there is the very real problem of global rapid climate change. But this problem is just a part of a far larger human pollution problem. And if we do not soon start to work on that problem by moving our civilization over to a non burning of fossil fuels civilization, our future descendants are simply going to be dying off by the billions. And if doing this means leaving them some kind of a debt problem, that will be a whole lot easier for them to deal with than the problem of breathing, drinking, and even eating in the very polluted world that we will leave them if we continue to even listen to the (head in the sand) deniers!!!!

Balto Bill: just a note, I live in the “Northwest” and most of the region has been in drought for over four years now. The coastal zone is only a portion of the “Northwest”, and they always get most of the rain, but people don’t know the real Northwest, like the fact that 75% of Oregon is DESERT!
The Congressional Tea-Party Repubs also know that since there’s no global warming, there can’t any western drought, thereforethere can’t be any more wildfires either.
Night gaunt: I’ll repeat it again, Dasmann and others were talking about desertification, and climate change (regionally at the time) since the 1950’s. Notable in Dasmann’s work in 1955 was the growth of the Sahara, due to human impacts around the Mediterranean.
This gets funnier by the day. The alarmists want to point to artificial consensus created by government research funding as proof and the deniers like me want to point to the scientific observations, yet we are called the unscientific parties to the debate. .
