No they don’t eat egg rolls in China. You can buy them at a foreign Market or get them at a Japanese restaurant, but in Chinese Markets or restaurants or even at home, they do not eat them.

I took a colleague from Shenzhen out to a Chinese restaurant in the States, and she was puzzled about the oddly shaped cookie with the piece of paper inside.

You’re saying the Chinese didn’t all stay in China?WHODATHUNK?.Not that it applies here. .Anyhoo, the Chinese are smart and creative if given the opportunity. That’s why they have done interesting things upon leaving the mainland and why even Hong Kong prospered right beside failure. Now, many more are prospering.

A little background on Leonard Woodcock. In February 1977 — less than a month after Carter took office and when Woodcock was still president of the UAW — Woodcock went to Vietnam and Laos to get information on MIAs and POWs.Woodcock returned with the remains of 12 servicemen whose planes were shot down during bombing missions.This seemed like a trial run for Carter to see how effective a negotiator Woodcock could be with foreign leaders.The 3 previous Chiefs of Liaison Office in Beijing all had extensive experience in government. The first one, David Bruce, was the only person to serve as ambassador to France, West Germany, and United Kingdom in his career. He was succeeded by George H.W. Bush.The predecessor to Woodcock, Thomas Gates, had been Secretary of Defense in the Eisenhower Administration.Carter felt he needed somebody with stronger negotiating skills for the position as the US and China moved forward in normalizing their relationship.
