“Margaret Thatcher, Indira Ghandi, and Golda Meir all showed that women do not take a backseat to men where war is concerned.”

Ah, how deliciously predictable. As if finding 3 women heads of state who served during war time makes women equally responsible for all the wars.

Still waiting for any examples of women CEO’s who’s financial scheming helped create the mess we’re in… as if finding one exception will somehow refute the rule.

Wiley – if your point is that women haven’t had the OPPORTUNITY to create the same sort of chaos as men, you’re 100% correct. If your point is that MANY women wouldn’t have made the same mistakes as the men in power, you are also correct.

The problem here is the implication that ALL women are better than ALL men.

Horsefeathers. There are bad women just as there are bad men. There are good men too, but the PROBLEM is that the system is set up such that good PEOPLE tend not to be in power.

Fix the system, don’t blame “men” for the problems the system creates!

You mean the system men created Logicman?

Women in power wouldn’t make the same mistakes men would, but they would sure make different ones! What we need is a person of each sex in each position of office so they can balance each other out.

Yes, you could list the number of women who are responsible for wars, but in comparison to the amount of men who have, the list might as well not exist!

No, “Logicman” (ironic screen name), there is no such implication. You are simply trying to reframe it with a bizarre extreme in order to misdirect the point. You cannot make any statement that applies to “ALL” women or “ALL” men. That’s a strawman debate tactic.

We still fight the battle of the sexes. Look, folks, we need to look forward. We all know that most wars were over lust and greed. Name some that were not. Frequently, in history, there were many women who, while not actually in power, were urging their men who were, to wage war for their own personal gain or revenge. There were women who had their men killed in order to elevate their lovers. I can say that what we need to do is go forward and make changes. The personal changes should be first and foremost. If we all can do something different and positive with the person in the mirror, we will go forward and not stagnate like we are now.

Satire is the art of highlighting the obvious and is always directed at the powerful, akin the fabled little boy who points out that the Emperor isn’t wearing any clothes. And the satirist can always tell how accurate it is by how loudly the target whines in protest, trying to make themselves out to be the victim.

The guy is not IN power. He’s sitting on a couch with his wife. They are equals here. HE is not starting a war and HE is obviously not an industrialist. SHE is quite willing to propogate a stereotype to suit her purpose - mess with her husband.

Way back in ancient history, let’s throw out a Semiramis, Jezebel, and Athaliah.

Don’t blame the banks for the economic disasters, they operate under a system of support which insures they can never fail. Blame the feds who are always so eager to make up any investment losses as soon as crisis is proclaimed. Banks would never make the stupid mistakes they do if they actually had to absorb the losses on their own, they are too smart for that.

Wiley–well, I could name Carly Fiorina, who ran Hewlett-Packard into the ground and is now running for Senator in California, but you’re right, she’s just one example. On the other hand, in my 26 years in the corporate world, I saw plenty of women managers who were just as greedy, short-sighted and nasty as the men. I also saw a whole lot of men who worked hard, played by the rules, and got shafted. I think it’s the system, not the gender, that matters here.

But I really sympathize with the guy’s comment in the last panel. I was all for putting more women into management. All that stuff about women being more nurturing, more team-oriented, and so forth. Sounded like a major improvement over the current Boss system. Alas, the system seemed to pickle anybody who started up the ladder. These days, the “fair haired boy” is just as likely to be a black woman–but she’s still just the New Boss, same as the Old Boss. Pity.

Heck, I’m a woman but I’m not “team-oriented” in the LEAST! (I can’t abide the Olympics!) Someone up there mentioned about starting with the self and I sort of go along those lines. Live rightly and things pretty much take care of themselves. Wiley talked about satirists and I’ve forgotten which writer said this but essentially it goes like this: Always tell the truth because you never have to remember which lie you told. (Will Rogers? Mark Twain?)

Josh 1360 said: “As for warmongers, the last of them past away one week ago….Alexander Haig.”

Al “I am in control here” Haig is hardly the “last” of the warmongers. What about Dick “They’ll greet us as liberators” Cheney? How about Don “Known Unknowns” Rumsfeld? Then there’s Condie “We don’t want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud” Rice. And the biggest one of them all: George W. “I think I was unprepared for war” Bush.

Whether Gen. Haig was a “warmonger” or not remains, I think, for history to decide; but he was most certainly NOT the “last” of that undying breed.

Ghandhi’s line about “BE the change you want to see in the World” seems apt here.

Lt.Gen. Chesty Puller USMC purportedly didn’t want women in combat, because he thought they’d “be too bloodthirsty”. I suspect if offspring were anywhere near involved in the theatre, I wouldn’t want to be between them.

I will respond, although I think my point is made well enough given many (but not all!) of the comments afterward, WM: My argument is more accurately ‘Reductio ad absurdum’. A ‘straw man’ is an argument based on misrepresentation of an opponent’s position. I didn’t say you SAID all women were good all men were bad.. You agreed finding one or three or even 300 counter examples doesn’t prove the point – I won’t go there.

Instead, I’m suggesting we follow the implications of your proposition (men caused the problems of the world) to a logical but absurd consequence (if women were in charge it is certain that things would be different) showing the fallacy of the argument. Logic is such a slippery thing.

And yes, the system probably was made “by men” but it was done with the consent and encouragement of women. If women shunned power grabbing war-mongering men, you bet your boots there would be fewer power grabbing war-mongering men! Instead, many (most?) women seem to think such men make great ‘providers’ and flock toward them like moths to a flame, and, if you follow that to the logical extreme, with similar results. This encourages the cycle to continue. We need a different model, but just putting women ‘in charge’ isn’t that model. Dismissing 50% of the population as inferior (which is what pop culture is doing to men now after so many eons of it doing the same thing to women!) is a recipe for disaster.

Sorry to be so windy … this isn’t really the forum for that, (it is a comic strip after all!) but it just had to be said! :)

Offspring does make a difference with some women. My mother is ready for blood when I might be only mildly upset by some insensitive idiot (men and women included in that description) when most of the time she tries as hard as she can to avoid conflict.

Incidentally, If I had to choose between a bloodthirsty man and a bloodthirsty women, I’d take the man any day. It would be a quicker and easier death by far.

In popular culture it is Safe, and Politically Correct to insult men (and boys), while praising, patronizing and fawning before women. Culturally, you’ll see where all this leads in the next 10-20 yrs. btw, women made up a great percentage of the people Selling (or peddling) those fraudulent & misleading loan packages at banks or real estate & mortgage offices around the country.

And surely as women control purchasing decisions of most households – you’ll find it was a majority of women who accepted those fake loans, knowing they either couldn’t afford them, or else knowing they had misrepresented facts on those meaningless applications.

In the USA, I really don’t think women have it worse than men. They might get paid a tad less for equal work in some fields, but in many cases they get paid the same for less work, e.g., the military, where they have lower standards and aren’t sent into combat zones. They get maternity leave and more paid time off than men. Tomboys are acceptable and sometimes even desirable in our culture, whereas girly-men are not. Women can get away wearing men’s clothing, but not the other way around. Women have a huge advantage in legal procedings, as they’re perceived as the victims. They nearly always get child custody after a divorce. There are more government aids and such to help out women, e.g. starting businesses, etc. In short, when a woman want’s to do a man’s thang, she says “I’m just as good as a man and I can do anything I want. Don’t discriminate.” When there is a conflict, she says “I’m just a woman and he took advantage of me” or whatever. Either way, the woman usually wins.

As for bosses, I’ve had my share of both genders, good and bad on both teams. But I prefer working for males, to be honest. Being a woman does not automatically make them nicer nor more approachable.

I suspect that for leaders of state or commerce, it’s only a matter of opportunity - less women in power. I don’t think women would be inherently kinder or just leaders, and if so, certainly not significantly so.
