    That’s not a joke… it’s actually what landlords will tell you.

    Last I checked, lead paint and asbestos were legal in rentals, along with pesticide residue…

    they’re considered safe as long as they’re neither loose nor peeling.

     

    If a place was built before a certain date, and you have children,

    they’re supposed to give you a form or a leaflet warning you not to let your kids chew the walls, in case those things are present.

     

    Of course, the landlord is also supposed to disclose their presence, if known,

    But try to prove that one.

    Once upon a time, when we had a baby and a toddler, we were living in a rental house that had been built in the 70s. The owner decided to put it up for sale, and we considered buying it. We had the paint tested, found out it had lead paint, and decided to pass. HOWEVER we were not sure the owner would be honest about it with potential buyers, so my husband put a copy of the certificate from the testing in the attic, to be discovered during the mandatory inspection prior to the sale going through.
