In between Huckleberry Hound and Nancy and Sluggo is a “Martian Popper Thing” (as the Archie McPhee catalog calls it). So, my list is: Stu Pickles, Patchy the Pirate, Gumby, “MPT”, Nancy, Sluggo, Ringo Starr, Roy, and Dagwood Bumstead, for a total of 9. I know I’m missing a couple, at least. That guy in the hat and trench coat next to Jughead could be either Columbo or Eddie Valiant.
I recommend that to up and coming young cartoonists. Same thing Johnny Hart once said: copy everything- not to steal or imitate- but to learn. You’ll sort out what things work for you, drop what doesn’t, and hopefully develop your own style from it.
