They took all the trees,
And put’em in a tree museum,
And charged the people,
A dollar and a half to see them,

I went to the San Antonio zoo once, while down there on business. Had some cool animals, but then I went by the big dirt-floor hole in the ground where the elephant lived, and got really depressed. That thing just looked SO frickin’ tired and sad. I contrast that in my memory with the film clip of one of the 2 Detroit elephants that was sent into retirement at that California? rescue ranch. It literally was skipping in joy coming off the truck, like a 2 year old, wanting to gambol in the wide open green spaces waiting for it. The other elephant was shy, and had to be coaxed off the truck, but cheered up within a few days. (They were old friends, and the zoo didn’t want to separate them.)

Well, to the complete novice the distinction between a “botanical garden” and a “zoological garden” may be a tad difficult…
Something just occurred to me. We have “zoos”, why not “bots”? Too bad the techies co-opted the second possibility first…

I’ll never forget the day I first saw a banana tree in its natural habitat, a shopping center atrium. So majestic.
