@howtheduckPossibly. The Marine Corps Manual, which I received in ’67 as a recruit, specifically mentioned that holding hands in public and while in uniform is discouraged. Also, the “escorts” servicemen “rented” while on R&R in the Far East would not allow touching in public. But true, some of us boys are kinda shy in these matters.
When my son was that age,I thought he wouldn’t want me to hug him in public so I stopped. Then he would look at me as if to ask,“don’t you love me anymore?” So I started back. He was never embarrassed to hug me in public. Now that he is grown and has his own family, he still does it when he gets a chance. So did his step-son when he was little.
