My grandpa’s basement had dirt walls and a huge belching coal furnace. There were spiders and lizards and just one bare lightbulb at the top of the stairs. I had to brave the conditions to go down and get to select a soda from his magical collection of multi-colored pops that sat in wooden crates at the bottom of the stairs.
probably went down for a jar of his momma’s homemade pickles. that’s where my grandmother kept her preserves and pickles…

When I was a little kid, I too was afraid of the basement. But I always took my dog with me for protection!
