My power and phone both went out at the same time yesterday, hours before the temps dropped and the winds picked up. Service was restored soon after.

Although I am very glad there are these “supermen/superwomen” who are willing to go out in the worst weather to help keep us warm, it would be nice if the grid was put together with something better than bubble gum and spit. There would be far fewer emergencies if we would invest in infrastructure.

I was just reading that we are going to be leaving billions of dollars’ worth of equipment in the Middle East, because bringing it home would cost too much.

We have all the money we want to promote death. Too bad that leaves us no money to promote our own well-being.

Yeah but they’ve kept us safe from commies for decades. Had we invested in infrastructure and health research with the same zeal where would we be today?

Every once in a while, an artist posts an editorial cartoon that all sides of the political spectrum can agree on. It warms my heart to see both liberals and conservatives in the comments section (usually at each other’s throats) come together to agree on this kind of issue. Those people who restore power, pulled away from their homes and family, are heroes. And thank God we haven’t been polarized into believing otherwise.

Ask a lineman in Arizona (or a friend who was an Army lineman in Iraq) if 130 degrees isn’t more miserable! (Heat also snaps lines btw.)

I’m curious about the cost/s of buried cable vs. aerial power lines. I’m afraid after the time it took to restore WashDC’s power the one summer I’m not convinced that buried lines are so much better….
